Park your scooter or car anywhere around the huge radio tower that marks the start of the trailhead at Dadong Mountain(大棟山). (There are often many stray dogs at this spot. Don’t be frightened…they can do a lot of barking but will generally quiet down if you ignore them, or scatter if you advance towards them.) Dadong Mountain is one of the famous “Five first class peaks” that provides a view of the Taipei basin, and indeed there is a viewing platform here where you can look out over Taipei in the distance. There is an older cache (not placed by me) about 25 meters away from here off the trail to the left. For this cache, however, you’ll want to take the trail to the right, behind the radio tower. The hike is relatively easy, with numerous short climbs and descents leading you towards Qinglong Hill(青龍嶺). The hike to Qinglong Hill takes about an hour, and there is another cache waiting for you there, should you choose to do the entire hike (which you should – it’s very beautiful, and not that demanding!). But this cache sits at about the halfway point to Qinglong Hill, at a spot where there is a table and some wooden benches to sit down, have a rest and take in the nice view in the distance. You will often see and hear eagles circling above you at this point in the hike!
