Geocache Description:

*** WE ARE CURRENTLY OUT OF COINS***

Sunbury began as St. John’s Parish and in 1752, the Dorchester Society secured land from the trustees and began to move there from their farms in Dorchester, SC. Trade increased and the parish was organized into the port town on Sunbury.

The planned port was laid out with wharves, town lots and three town squares. Due to the wide mouth location and deep harbor on the Medway River, Sunbury soon rivaled Savannah in shipping and wealth. The citizens of Sunbury were staunch supporters of the American Revolution and fought against the British occupation of their town. Many residents left during the British occupation and the town never recuperated.
