Geocache Description:

Newtownhamilton or simply Newtown to locals is a small town in South Armagh. Before the Plantation of Ulster it was known as Tullyvallen and was renamed by Alexander Hamilton in 1773 and was once an important stop off between Armagh and Dundalk. The town has suffered in past decades from the rise of other towns in the area like Markethill, Castleblaney and Bessbrook as well as cities like Newry and Armagh becoming little more than a group of houses and small shops. This series will highlight a few local areas of history and interest. This cache is in the same spot as a previous cache of mine a long time ago. This hill is notorious during winter as snow and ice can make it a hazardous decent and in my youth I always thought of it as a ski slope. Newtownhamilton is officially the highest town in Northern Ireland and as a result we get snow when other surrounding towns don't. Known locally as McCliemons's Brae ( not sure of spelling ), legend has it that a local man hurtles down it on a bicycle years ago and fell to his death when he hit a stone on the road. It offers a magnificent view of the South Armagh countryside and the town itself.
