The area now known as Portsmouth, Rhode Island was settled in 16AB and officially named Portsmouth on May FC, 16E9.
Portsmouth is the site of one of the earliest and most bizarre murder trials that took place in 16IG after Rebecca Cornell died and her son, Thomas, was sentenced to death despite there being only, at best, circumstantial evidence against him. The more realistic possibility that Rebecca died by catching on fire next to the fire place was dismissed in favor of this other testimony. The only evidence presented was a witness claiming that Rebecca’s ghost visited her saying that Thomas started the fire, and this claim was accepted as solid evidence that eventually resulted in Thomas’ execution.
Founder’s Brook, located in town, was the site of an important capture during America’s War for Independence. After a nearby battle at Butt's Hill, Founder’s Brook was said to have run red with the blood of fallen soldiers on August 2J, 177D.
Although not a major historical landmark, a major staple of Portsmouth is Clement’s Market, which first opened its doors in 198H.
