Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT within the cemetery grounds. Please be respectful of the area as this is an active cemetery.

I enjoy walking around old cemeteries and this one offers beautiful views of the Eastern Sierra's in the distance. The cemetery has a section that is over 100 years old with beautiful memorial headstones. The Mt. Whitney Cemetery was originally established by the Knights of Pythias in Lone Pine and was made possible by the donation of ranch land for this purpose. The cemetery is located right on California Highway 395, on the northern portion of Lone Pine. It is administered by the Lone Pine Cemetery District and is an active cemetery. Nearby, on the opposite side of Highway 395 is the mass grave cemetery for the victims of the 1872 earthquake. There is a Virtual cache for the historical sight;  Earthquake Memorial GC9345.

The cemetery grounds are open daily 8:00am to 4:00pm and provides ample parking if you want to explore.Visit the southern end to see the older section. At N 36 37.173 W 118 04.081 is the burial plot of the Miller family. Near the Mt. Whitney Cemetery sign you can find a book containing the names of all those buried here.

If the gates are closed there is space in front of the gates to park. Be careful when merging back onto the highway.  As always with cemetery caches please be respectful of the area.
