Area History:
Native Americans of the Columbia River Gorge told of a natural stone bridge that crossed the river here, a peaceful thoroughfare connecting the peoples of the North and South banks. Contemporary geologists agree this bridge existed, created by a powerful landslide 500 years ago. Eventually, the river surged through this dam and reduced it to whitewater rapids, later called the Cascades of the Columbia. Those rapids have now been covered by the backwater from Bonneville Dam.
