Geocache Description:

An interesting refueling rest stop on I-17. You can drive to within a few feet of this cache site.

We stopped here on our way home from a motorcycle trip to take a break from the heat. Couldn't resist making this novel place into a virtual.

In order to claim this as a find, you will need to submit a picture of one of your team members in front of one of the murals. If you are alone and can't find anyone willing to take your picture, then you can submit a boring photo of your GPS with one of the murals.

(Previously, it was required to take your photo with the nearby cutouts. There has been some remodeling of the area, and new murals were painted on the buildings where the cutouts used to be.)

Rock Springs was originally a periodic encampment for the Yavapai Indians. Since the 1800's, "The Rock" as it later became known, served as a water stop for miners, cattle drivers, sheepherders, and travelers on the Black Canyon trail. Around 1917, the last Black Canyon Stage Coach was retired, and motor vehicles took over the trail. Ben Warner, a 19 year old entrepreneur, built a canvas-covered store to supply merchendise to travelers, miners, and local ranchers. As the business grew, Ben opened a hotel and general store. Many tired travelers stopped at the hotel, including Tom Mix and Jean Harlow. The Goldwater family, also frequented the store and cafe.

Check out the nearby Rock Springs store that is still operating, and their famous pies.
