Van pater tot stroppendrager

Voor Keizer Karel de bouw van het Spanjaardenkasteel beval, stond hier de Sint-Baafsabdij. Eeuwenoude Gentse trots aan de samenvloeiing van Schelde en Leie. Op het bovenstaande stukje uit het schilderij van Lucas D'Heere (die hier een straat naar hem genoemd in de buurt heeft), staan de contouren van het kasteel al aangeduid. 

Het afbreken van de abdij was onderdeel van de Concessio Carolina, evenals het boeteproces waarop zoals gekend de Gentse schepenen met strop en boetekleed vergiffenis gingen vragen bij Keizer Karel. 

De muur voor u is het oudste nog bestaande onderdeel van de abdij, en waarschijnlijk de oudste muur van Gent.

Before Charles V (Holy Roman Emperor) ordered the construction of the so-called Spanish Castle, there used to be an monastery called the Sint-Baafsabdij (abbey of Saint Bavo). The city Ghent found its origins here, at the confluence of the rivers Leie en Schelde. In the painting by Lucas D'Heere (there's a street nearby called after him) here above you can see the contours of the castle already outdrawn.

The demolition of the monastery was part of the Concessio Carolina, which also was responsible for the famous repentance of the Ghent jurats where they had to wear a noose around the neck and bow for the Emperor Charles. The nickname for the inhabitants is until today still the "stroppendragers" or the wearers of the nooses.

The wall before you is the oldest still standing part of the abbey en is probably the oldest wall in all of Ghent
