L'abbazia fu fondata dai monaci cistercensi nel 1120, una delle prime comunità cistercensi italiane al di fuori dei confini francesi. Qui i monaci modernizzarono lo sviluppo culturale ed economico, specialmente la lavorazione e la produzione agricola, visibile ancora oggi nel territorio adiacente l'abbazia. L'operato dei monaci fu molto importante per la valle del torrente Orba poiché grazie al costante lavoro sui terreni, riuscirono a bonificare l'intero comprensorio di Tiglieto e della valle circostante con un'ingegnosa opera di canali.
L'abbazia è costituita dalla chiesa, intitolata alla Vergine con il titolo appunto di Santa Maria alla Croce; con l'asse principale orientato da ovest ad est; sul lato est si trova il convento da cui si diparte la sala del refettorio. I tre edifici racchiudono i tre lati del chiostro, mentre il quarto lato è costituito da altri volumi destinati ad uso agricolo o affini. Nel corso del XVIII secolo i monaci abbandonarono la valle, lasciando la badia sotto la proprietà privata dei marchesi Salvago Raggi.
Ad oggi un delicato intervento di restauro conservativo - grazie ai fondi di una nota banca locale, della Provincia di Genova e del Parco naturale regionale del Beigua - ha permesso l'apertura al pubblico della struttura religiosa. I lavori, terminati il 10 ottobre del 2004, hanno recuperato l'intera struttura rispettando gli antichi aspetti artistici esteriori medievali e di quelli interni risalenti al Seicento.
L'antico ordine cistercense è ritornato nuovamente nell'abbazia il 28 luglio 2000 rimanendovi fino al 2011. Purtroppo, in seguito alle nuove disposizioni sul numero minimo necessario per il mantenimento delle comunità religiose, i monaci hanno dovuto ridistribuirsi, lasciando Tiglieto. Ma è ovvio sperare - ed evidenti sarebbero i benefici spirituali e pastorali per la Valle d’Orba e per la nostra diocesi - in un prossimo loro ritorno.
La cache: sul sentiero secondario che porta all'abbazia. Per arrivare comodamente lasciare l'auto presso (WP1) e incamminarsi non seguendo le indicazioni ma proseguendo sul prato oltre i tavoli da pic-nic e una catena (5 minuti). Per ogni INFO non esitate a contattarmi.

The abbey was founded by Cistercian monks in 1120, one of the first Cistercian Italian community outside of France's borders. Here the monks modernized the cultural and economic development, especially processing and agricultural production, still visible today in the territory adjacent to the abbey. The work of the monks was very important for the Orba river valley since thanks to the constant work on the land, they managed to clean up the entire area of Tiglieto and the surrounding valley with an ingenious work of channels.
The abbey consists of the church dedicated to the Virgin with the title precisely of Santa Maria to the Cross; with the main axis oriented from west to east; on the east side is the convent from which branches off the refectory. The three buildings enclose the three sides of the cloister, while the fourth side is made from other volumes used for agricultural purposes or the like. During the eighteenth century the monks abandoned the valley, leaving the abbey under the private ownership of Salvago Rays Marquis.
Today a delicate restoration efforts - thanks to the funds of a local bank notes, the Province of Genoa and the Regional Natural Park of Beigua - allowed the public opening of the religious structure. Work was completed on October 10, 2004, have recovered the entire structure respecting the ancient medieval outer artistic aspects and those interiors dating from the seventeenth century.
The old Cistercian order came back again in the Abbey July 28, 2000 and remained until 2011. Unfortunately, because of the new provisions on the minimum number required for the maintenance of the religious communities, the monks had to redistribute, leaving Tiglieto. But of course hope - and obvious would be the spiritual and pastoral benefits Valle d'Orba and for our diocese - in the near their return.
