Ved garden Sælto startar «Galdavegen», ein av de mest særeigne og frykta strekningane langs den Bergenske Kongeveg. Fleire reiseskildringar fortel at dette måtte vere eitt av dei farlegaste og vanskelegaste vegstykka i landet. Kongevegen gjennom Galdane vart bygd på høge tørrmurar i dei bratte liene, eit imponerande verk i si samtid. Men bakkane gjorde også vegen tung og vanskeleg for dei reisande. Reiseskildringar fortel om ridande som ikkje torde å sitje på hestane i dei brattaste bakkane. Og hadde ein last med, måtte ein ofte laste om og ta den i fleire vendingar. Vinterstid var det enno verre; is, steinsprang og ras gjorde det direkte livsfarleg å gå gjennom Galdane. Ei vandring i Galdane er som å gå inn eit skattkammer. Ikkje berre vil du oppleve eit makelaust veganlegg, men området er også spekka med spor etter dei mange som har vore her før oss. Nyt også den storslegne naturen i dalen med både dramatiske formasjonar og ein svært frodig flora.
Då den Bergenske Kongeveg vart bygd på slutten av 1700-talet, fekk ein for fyrste gong køyreveg mellom Aust- og Vestlandet. I dag er den gamle Kongevegen eitt av dei finaste veghistoriske kulturminna vi har. Den 10 mil lange vandreruta Kongevegen over Filefjell tek deg gjennom nokre av dei vakraste landskapa i Noreg. Frå tronge og dramatiske fjordlandskap inst i Sognefjorden, via høgfjellet på Filefjell, og ned i innlandsbygdene i Valdres. Ei reise mellom landsdelane - med den historiske Kongevegen som den raude tråden undervegs. Der vegen er borte nyttar ein andre trasear, slik at det blir ein samanhengande turveg frå Lærdalsøyri til Vang. Syklistar har alternative ruter utanom dei mest sårbare delane av Kongevegen.
“Galdavegen” starts by the farm Sælto, and is one of the most characteristic and feared stretches along Bergenske Kongeveg. In numerous travelogues, it has been described as the most dangerous and challenging road in the country. Kongevegen through Galdane was built on high stone foundations clinging to the steep hillsides – an impressive piece of engineering at the time. The climbs, however, made this a strenuous and challenging journey for travellers. Travelogues describe riders who did not dare navigating the steepest hills on horseback. Loads often had to be reorganised and split over several trips. In winter, conditions were even worse; ice, rockfalls, and avalanches made the trip through Galdane extremely dangerous. A hike in Galdane is like walking through a treasure trove. In addition to an extraordinary road system, there are many traces left behind by those who previously used this route. Also, there is the valley’s spectacular scenery, with its dramatic formations and lush flora, to enjoy.
Bergenske Kongeveg, built at the end of the 1700s, was the first proper road between eastern and western Norway. Today, the old Kongevegen is one of our most beautiful cultural heritage routes. The 100 km Kongevegen across Filefjell walk leads through some of Norway's most spectacular scenery. From the narrow, dramatic fjord landscape innermost in the Sognefjord, via the high mountains at Filefjell, and down to the inland villages in Valdres. A journey from one part of the country to another – linked together by the historic Kongevegen.
