Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the Lewis & Clark Trail Series. The cache is located about one mile from the trail head along a hiking trail in the beautiful Cross Ranch Nature Preserve. Along the trail you’ll enjoy an incredible view of the Missouri River valley and the surrounding plain. The cache was created in cooperation with the Cross Ranch Nature Preserve.

Cross Ranch Nature Preserve is located about 13 miles south of Washburn. For additional driving directions see: www.ndparks.com/Parks/CRSP.htm
Pavement ends at the entrance road to the Cross Ranch State Park Visitor Center. Take the gravel road north for about one mile. Look for the Cross Ranch Nature Reserve sign. There is a parking area to the west of the road but it is partially obscured by a clump of trees so it’s easy to miss. The trailhead is clearly marked.

There’s a fairly good chance you’ll see a buffalo herd during your hike so bring binoculars. You’ll most likely see the herd toward the west. Buffalo can be dangerous so use common sense and avoid close encounters with them. On top of one of the highest points you’ll find the gravesite of the Cross Ranch founder. It is reported this was his favorite spot on the ranch and he requested to be buried there.

The cache is in an ammo can and contains a copy of the Journals of Lewis & Clark with passages marked referring to this area as Lewis & Clark saw it during 1804. Please do not remove the copy of the Journals of Lewis & Clark.

Be sure to check out other caches in the Lewis & Clark Trail Series: Caches are located at Fort Lincoln State Park, Fort Mandan, Cross Ranch State Park, Cross Ranch Nature Preserve, Fort Stevenson State Park, and Lewis & Clark State Park.
