An easy cache in a pleasant woodland location. Needs some energy to climb over 80 steps to get up to GZ bt worth it.
The cache is near the local stretch of the 'Black Path' which are the remnants of an eighteenth century horse drawn tramway linking Maesteg to Bridgend and Porthcawl. It was used to carry coal and iron ore from Maesteg to ironworks in the Bridgend area and for onward shipment from Porthcawl. This tramway is a rich source of geocache locations - see The Black Path #2 (GC52K53), Lets Make Noise (GC4ZD0Y) and Three Arch Bridge (GC305D5, now archived), all of which are along the tramway..
GZ is not on the black path itself but about twenty feet from it. This location also marked the junction of the tramway with an 'incline' built to connect a tramway from east of the river Llynfi. A derelict bridge carrying this branch line can be seen from Shwt bridge, further along the A4063 towrds Maesteg.
The cache is a black plastic snap-top cylinder containing the log and a small pencil. It is large enough to hold some small swaps, geocoins or trackables. It contains a trackable for the lucky FTF.
Sadly, the parking point is strewn with litter. I took some away as a mini-CITO when I left the cache. Hopefully other cachers will contribute to the cleanup. As we say in Welsh - dyfal donc a dyr y gareg, - many small strikes will break the boulder.
