head up the track towards the monument. This memorial takes the form of a giant metal open book and is dedicated to the poet Hugh MacDiarmid. Created by the sculptor Jake Harvey, the MacDiarmid Memorial is dedicated to one of Scotland's greatest poets of the 20th century. Born Christopher Murray Grieve on 11 August 1892 in Langholm, Hugh MacDiarmid spent the majority of his life away from his birthplace but returned as often as possible, particularly to enjoy the Common Riding. Known by his pen name Hugh MacDiarmid, was a Scottish poet, journalist, essayist and political figure. He is best known for his works written in 'synthetic Scots', or Lallans, a literary version of the Scots language that MacDiarmid himself developed. The son of a postman, MacDiarmid was born in Langholm. He was educated at Langholm Academy before becoming a teacher for a brief time at Broughton Higher Grade School in Edinburgh.
