01 / THE PLACE
A line of water above the city
The Segovia Aqueduct carried water from the mountains to the city along a route of more than 16 kilometres. Gravity kept it flowing; at its most visible point, a row of arches carried the channel over the valley. The channel at the top supplied cisterns and public fountains.

Its precise date of construction remains a subject of research. The monument and the old town have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.

02 / THE CONSTRUCTION
How can it stand without mortar?
Large granitic stone blocks were set without bonding mortar in the arcades. Wedge-shaped stones called voussoirs form the arches. During construction, a temporary wooden centering frame supported them until each arch was complete. Water ran through the channel above, which served a different purpose from the load-bearing masonry.

03 / GEOLOGY
The story began underground
Granite is an intrusive igneous rock: it formed when magma cooled slowly below the surface. Its crystals had time to grow large enough to see. In a granitic rock you may find quartz (often grey or translucent), feldspars (light-coloured or pink) and micas (dark flakes). The aqueduct blocks vary in texture and mineral make-up; “granite” is often used as a general name for these granitic rocks.

Compare this diagram with the grains you can see on the monument
The texture you feel depends on crystal size and arrangement, the original stoneworking and later weathering. Colour or grain size alone cannot tell you a block’s hardness.

WHERE DID THE STONE COME FROM?
El Berrocal near Ortigosa del Monte contains traces of old quarrying. A geological study found its stone compatible with aqueduct blocks; it has not established that every block came from that quarry. Other nearby rock outcrops have also been considered. |
