Welcome to the Tahbilk area
From this hill you can see a house about 2 kilometers roughly east south east with a green roof, it's in a paddock which now has a good number of grape vines. This was my grandparents house and farm, my grandfather built the house when my grandmother threatened to leave him because she wasn't living in the old house that stood there before it. The wind used to blow straight through the walls of the old house, so I am told.
My parents grew up and were married in the Avenel and Nagambie areas but they moved to Melbourne a year or so before I was born. When I was a toddler and my twin brothers were born my mother was very sick and I lived with my grandparents on the farm for many months. I like to think that I can remember those days but I was probably too young and now I'm too old.
When I was a young school aged lad our parents used to bring us too the farm at every opportunity, it was still dad's home. Me and my 4 brothers used to have a ball when we were there as kids. We used to go fishing and rabbiting and generally just exploring the whole area. We would be gone for hours just running and playing all sorts of things. Once or twice we even came up to this hill exploring, we would have gotten killed if the oldies had found out that we crossed the highway.
I have many many fond memories of my grandparents and growing up here on various weekends and every school holidays. We could not wait to get here. We were very lucky to have an opportunity that many did not.
Access to the Reserve
You can access the reserve either on foot or by car via an access easement
If walking, you can park at waypoint GATE1 and proceed through the reserve from that point. Note that it is very dry and rocky and you might want to take some water.
If entering by car, there is an access easement along the fence line through the gate. Be aware that it is farmland and there may be stock in this paddock. Always close the gates after you. There are two gates to go through, the first one is onto the easement and the second is into the reserve. Between the gates, stick to the fence-line, this is where the easement is. The road up is in good condition and is suitable for a two wheel drive vehicle.
The Cache
A 1 liter(ish) tube/pipe container located where you do not need to climb.
