Geocache Description:

Another old school site that is part of our state history.

The cache owner has some affiliation with this school as he attended from 1955 to 1957.
In that period it was a single teacher school with grades 1 to 7.

The School was opened in 1939, a wooden portable building 15 ft by 15 ft, from Carawa. It had a front porch with a shelter shed at the back. It was placed on a corner plot, in one of Gunn's paddocks.
Raymond Behrndt of Botanical Gardens, Adelaide was the first teacher. Unfortunately he lost his life while serving in the R.A.A.F. in W. W. 2.
The teachers were boarded in the friendly and comfortable homes of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Gunn, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Gunn, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dodgson, for a very small amount of money. They either walked, drove or rode a bicycle to their school duties. The average attendance would have been around 12 students, ranging from grade 1 through to Grade VII. The children rode bicycles or rode in a horse and jinker to School.
The School grounds were gradually cleared and Tuart Gums were planted, which mark the area to this day. The 3 or 4 Norfolk Pines planted by Mr. Behrndt did not grow so well. A small garden was set out on the north of the school.
Arbour Day was usually held in July of each year, and the children delighted to perform their items - poems, plays or songs to commemorate the day. The Chairman of the School committee usually spoke to the children and visiting adults. Fruit and lollies were given to the children and of course, a half day holiday wa taken. A break-up concert was held in December of each year and suitable items were performed. Sports were held in the play ground. Book prizes were given out by the Chairman for the year’s work.
Some of the Chairmen over the years included Mr. Pat Kenny, Mr. Albert Starkey, Mr. Dave Gunn, Mr. Reg Hull and Mr. Harold Bayley.
The little school was eventually closed in 1965, and the building was sent to the Port Kenny School. Since the new brick building at Port Kenny, the old Mt. Cooper School has been sold and erected at Bairds Bay.
