Geocache Description:

A short exploration of the High Street of the village of Hurstpierpoint collecting clues from seven points along the way to make the coordinates for the final cache. The walk is about 400m long, with an additional short detour off the High Street to collect the cache.

I have picked out several of the main historical landmarks of the village from which to collect the clues, but there are other interesting buildings to look at as you walk along. The High Street is narrow and quite busy so it is best to start and park in the village car park (see parking instructions) or elsewhere away from the High Street.

1. Start from the village car park (N 50 56.057 W 000 10.675) and leave by the pedestrian exit in the south-west corner. You are now on the village green. Turn right along the High Street for about 75 metres to the mini-roundabout. At N 50 56.027 W000 10.781 you will see a memorial to Henry Holman a surgeon who worked in the village during Victorian times. What year was the memorial placed? Answer = 187a.

2. Now go back east along the High Street to the green. At N 50 56.030 W 000 10.735 you will find a bronze statue of seven children representing the 700th anniversary of the granting by Edward II in 1314 of the right for Hurstpierpoint to hold a fair. Count the number of buttons of the back of the jacket of the Georgian child to get b.

3. The name of the village derives from 'Hurst', the Old English name for a wood, and 'Pierpoint' after the de Pierpoint family who arrived with William the Conqueror in 1066. The settlement was mentioned in the Domesday Book. At N 50 56.019 W000 10.708 you will see the village sign showing the figure of a knight. No clue to collect here.

4. Continue up the High Street and on the right you will see a lane at N 50 56.000 W 000.10.674. How long in yards might you expect it to be? Answer = cde .

5. Walk up the High Street to the Mansion House on your right at N 50 55.991 W 000 10.623. This is an old building which for a few years in the 1860s housed Hurstpierpoint College. Although it was given its brick frontage in Georgian times, some of the original timbers are much older. How many windows on the front of the building have glass in them? Answer = f

6. Across the road you will see an alley way signed to the ACF Centre. Go down the alley and you will see a cottage in front of you, behind which is the Drill Hall for the Prince of Wales No 16 Detachment of Army Cadets. What date is above the door at N 50 56.007 W 000 10.594? Answer = 17gh.

7. Walk back to the High Street. Opposite you is a pub which got its license in 1811 after the original Royal Oak pub across the road (long since gone) had its license revoked due to ‘continual rowdyism’. No clue to collect here.

8. Continuing eastwards you will come to Cards Place at N 50 55.963 W000 10.557 which was built in 1900 at the direction of the new church Rector to replace a row of ramshackle cottages. In the centre of the front of the building you will see a Latin inscription which when translated says ‘As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord’. Add together the total number of letters of the first four words of the Latin inscription.’ Answer = ij

9. Carry on eastwards down to the next pub on the left (about 100 metres). Have a look at the sign at N 50 55.946 W 000.10.482. How many letters are there in the pub's name on the sign? Divide the total by 2. Answer =kl.

You will find the final cache at N 50 55. (a+k)(j-l)(g-j) W 000 10. b(h+d-c)(f+e-i).

Please bring a pen to mark the log and take care removing and replacing the container.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MARTLETSMAN FOR PERSISTING WITH THE CACHE AND GETTING THE FIRST TO FIND.
