Den 2 april hade Allsvenskan i fotboll premiär 2016. För första gången spelar ett lag från Norrlands inland i Allsvenskan. ÖFK spelar sin första match i högsta ligan den 4:e april borta mot Hammarby.

Östersunds Fotbollsklubb - ÖFK bildades 31 oktober 1996, genom ett samarbete mellan Ope IF, IFK Östersund och Östersunds/Torvalla FF (ÖTFF). ÖFK tog då över ÖTFFs plats i seriespelet. Efter 20 år som klubb debuterar man alltså i högsta ligan.
