Turnbull Canyon is known as a popular area for Satanists, kidnappers, ghots, and supposedly a gravity hill. Despite these residents, the area is still popular with non-threatening hikers and bikers. The chaparral-covered mountain with its twisted road can be found between Whittier and the City of Industry.
This area was considered off-limits to local Indians, who dubbed it "Hutukngna," or "The Dark Place." In 1845, the Spanish Governor of Alta California gave the deed to most of the land of what is now Whittier to two settlers, John Rowland and William Workman, who emigrated from Taos, New Mexico. The local Indians did not seem to like Workman, as they constantly raided his land.
During the Depression years, it was said that the canyon was possibly the site of a baby/child-selling cult. It is still believed to be used for satanic worship. There was once an insane asylum somewhere along the weeded floor of the canyon, but it burned down in the 1930's. Legend has it that a group of teenagers were partying in the ruins around 1962 and one of the boys was killed by a long-dormant electro-shock device. Aside from the ghosts and other figures people claim to see around the canyon, street racing is also a problem in the canyon, as "drifting" has become a popular activity on the winding road. One girl was struck and dragged behind a car for 5 miles, which killed her. A few years later, a motorcycle cop was killed by a drunk, possibly road racing driver.
