Old Church Cemetery Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Sandy Dog: I have decided to archive this cache as it seems to be going missing so often. I have replaced it a couple of times only to have it go missing by the time someone went out looking for it. Not sure what is going on here. Maybe a squirrel is collecting them.

Geocache Description:

This Cemetery is known as the Old Church Cemetery. It is no longer an active cemetery. Please be considerate when walking in the cemetery.

There are many stories about this cemetery. One I heard was that back in the great flood of 1936 the original cemetery, which was located on the banks of the Merrimack River, was completely washed away, bodies and all. Only the headstones remained and they were relocated to their current place behind the church. Because of this the cemetery became known as having no bodies.

A local historian tells a different story. The original cemetery, which was known as the Meeting House Cemetery, was located on the banks of the Merrimack River just across the street. Sometime in the mid eighteen hundreds the cemetery needed to be moved because of bank erosion during the spring floods. The old slate stones were moved, some of them were placed behind the chuch and others were place at the Pincrest and Hillcrest cemeteries. Yes, only the stones were moved and not the bodies. So in this cemetery the grave sites with the slate stones have no bodies and the "newer" stones do in fact contain bodies.

Please be careful where you walk. The cache is not located among the stones. Being as old as they are the stones can be easily tipped over. Note the ages on the stones. Some of the residents of Litchfield lived to be very old and some died at a young age.
