A stroll along the trail will lead to a nice view of the Puyallup River and the connection to the wetlands. The Wetlands are open from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset.
Thirty years ago this 9.6 acre parcel of land was used as mitigation for the filling of a similar parcel of land. This area, which had been a former city landfill, is now home to thousands of plants, hundreds of birds and a wide variety of mammals, fish, reptiles and amphibians. The wetland was created when the river dike was breached near this cache location, allowing the water to enter and drain with the tide. Wetlands are valuable as natural sponges, nurseries, and water filters.
Keep a sharp lookout for flying creatures that frequent the area including Grebe, Goose, Duck, Merganser, Teal, Coot, Heron, Killdeer, Sandpiper, Hawk, Goldfinch, Quail, Sparrow, Chickadee, Wren, Warbler, Finch, Gull, Swallow, Dove, Pheasant, and Jay. You also may be lucky enough to spot river otter and sea lions who also visit the area.
