The Northern Cardinal has been Ohio’s state bird since 1933 and remains a common sight.
What’s strange is that these birds were once quite rare in Ohio, because the state was heavily forested. Once western settlers started clearing the land, though, these striking birds began to flourish in the new, more open landscapes they prefer.
