Geocache Description:

NoVAGO's Spring CITO to help clean up the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

Entrance fees will be waived for all volunteers.

One of the great treasures in NoVAGO Territory is the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge.  Home to many forms of wildlife, scenic walks, and wonderful views.  Unfortunately, the paths along the bay also collect various forms of litter and refuse brought in by the high tides.

This event is being organized in coordination with the staff of the Refuge, and is designed to assist them in keeping this area clean and beautiful.

Past CITOs at the refuge have been such a huge success that the park is calling us in to help do some spring cleaning.

Here are the event details.

Date:  Sunday May 15th

Time: 9:30 am until Noon (end time approximate)

The coordinates will take you to the parking area for the event.  Those attending the clean up will not need to pay the regular park entry fee.  From the listed coordinates participants will walk down to the shore line where the clean up will occur.  The area to be cleaned up is shown on the map below.

Trash collected by NoVAGO will be left along the path for Park Staff and its partners the Friends of the Potamac River Refuges to pick up, so there will be no need to haul full bags any great distance.  The total distance walked if following the loop road will be approximately 3 miles.  Please bring comfortable walking shoes and clothing appropriate for the day's weather.  Event will take place regardless of rain or shine.  Tornadoes, blizzards, and epic lightning might merit cancellation.

This refuge is a favorite amongst birders and naturalists alike.  Is not uncommon to see Eagles, Osprey and many other forms of wildlife while walking the paths.

Please be on time as the walk to the shore will start promptly at 9:30 am.  If you happen to run behind schedule simply take the road going directly South from the parking area and you will surely catch up with the folks at the shore line cleaning up the area.
