Geocache Description:

An easy cache, requiring only a short hike to a peaceful little area.

During a volunteer day a little while ago, we discovered this awesome container in the shed, complete with a logbook that hadn't been signed since 2009.  Upon doing a little research, we discovered that it was the original final stage for the ONP multi cache that still exists within the Preserve.  So there seemed no other choice than to re-purpose it in a new location!

The green trail where you will be journeying is comprised of a hardwood hammock; one of several different ecosystems that exist on ONP grounds.  Hammock ecosystems are stands of trees that grow on elevated areas, often just a few inches high, surrounded by a larger wetlands ecosystem.  Since this climate is too wet to support them, they form their own, smaller ecosystem. This phenomenon can also occur on stands of hardwood trees growing on slopes between wetlands and drier uplands. Unlike many ecosystems in the area, they are not fire-resistant, but the neighboring wetlands offer some protection should fire occur.  This specific area is a mesic hammock, meaning wet soil.  On the yellow trail, you will find a xeric (dry soil) hammock.

Your GPS may bounce a little due to the tree cover, but use your geosenses.  This is a pretty large cache, not intended to be difficult.  It is stuffed COMPLETELY full of swag; FTF should feel free to take a few things without replacing, it's probably a bit too full right now!  Feel free to use the nearby area to spread out and sort through what's inside - including a little baggie at the bottom containing sig items from the Girl Scout troop that first placed this cache back in 2004.

UPDATE: The original large cache has sadly gone missing. We have replaced it with a much smaller replacement.
