Sands Field lies within the Grubbins Wood Nature reserve, which is run by Cumbria Wildlife Trust. It has in the past been used for agriculture but is now being managed as a wildflower grassland, sometimes grazed by cattle to encourage the flowering plants. You can enter the Nature Reserve from the foreshore , via a short rough path to a gate where there is a display board with a map, and a supply of leaflets. The cache is most easily accessed from Sands Field though it lies slightly outside the boundary. You can also scramble up to it from the foreshore path, tides permitting.
