Geocache Description:

You will need a kayak, paddleboard, or boat to reach this cache. You are searching for a small container with log only (bring your own pen, it's a long way back to shore). Ideally you would launch a kayak near the '3 bridges' on US 1 between Port Orange and New Smyrna. This is the 3rd of a three part cache series all requiring water access and all located on ancient Timucuan Indian sites in this maze of islands.

This archeological site dates back to 2000 years ago when this island was home to an estimated 50-100 people who used these waters to fish and harvest oysters. It's interesting to see a boat of local fisherman pass by still fishing the same waters 2000 years later. The high ground of this island is built from discarded oyster dinner scraps (this place must have been a pretty happening oyster bar in it's day). The inhabitants of this island were socially connected to the nearby Green Mound site in Ponce Inlet which evidence shows was occupied during the same time period (Hi neighbor can I borrow a cup of oysters). Green Mound in Ponce Inlet is the 2nd highest Indian midden (mound) in North America, even showing up on early European navigational maps as a landmark visible from sea to mariners. The tallest midden in North America is Turtle Mound south of New Smyrna Beach in the Canaveral National Seashore. This is the 3rd of 3 caches in this area all requiring water access.... also stop by "Wasted Away Again in Timucuan-ville" and "It's Another Timucuan Sunrise".
