May Hill is a great spot, with great views, it's distinctive clump of trees on top and relatively easy access via numerous footpaths. It is situated part way between Ross-on-Wye and Gloucester and has relatively easy access from the A40 via a couple of minor roads. Reaching 296 metres above sea level May Hill is relatively high for the area but the footpaths to the top are generally pretty good.
So I thought it would be nice to have an event at the top for May Day - hence May Day on May Hill.
Okay, so the astute amoungst you (and I know that's a lot of you) will have noticed that this event is actually on May the 2nd and not May the 1st but if I did this event on actual May Day we would be competing for space with many people that use the hill on that day, from druids to morris dancers, so I thought as the May Day Bank Holiday this year was the day after I thought this was the next best option.
Speaking of morris dancers, May Hill used to be called Yartleton Hill but it is thought that it was renamed May Hill after all the events that took place, including morris dancing, on May the 1st every year.
I thought this could be a nice simple event where we just meet at the trig point (the above co-ords) at about 1030. Perhaps bring a flask and a cake, and a picnic blanket or waterproofs depending on the weather!
There are several ways up the hill but I thought it would be part of the fun for you to find your own way to the top and perhaps find some of the caches dotted around the hill and surrounding area.
EVENT DATE: May 2nd 2016
EVENT TIME: 1030-1200
EVENT LOCATION: Meet at the trig point
Really hope to see you there.
***Many thanks to Longhope Parish Council for approving this event.***
