Often, cachers ask me where I came up with 'Shake-N-Bake!' as my caching name. They ask if is it in reference to "Talladega Nights - The Ballad of Ricky Bobby." Well yes, sort of. Here's the story:
In 2006, the table shuffleboard team I was playing on, "Triple Crown Rat Pack", was changing. Our captain was about to move out to California, so we needed a new team captain. He handed me our team folder (after only being on the team for 2 seasons) and said I needed to take over as captain. Since he was moving, I felt it appropriate to change the team name, but to what? One evening while I was hosting the league poker tournament here, my buddies and teammates Nate and Jason came into the bar after seeing "Talladega Nights" in the theater, and were quoting the movie. Of course, at one point they said "Shake 'N Bake!" and I laughed, and only semi-seriously suggested that we should change our shuffleboard team name to that. Since Nate and Jason's BBQ Cookoff team name was already "Shake 'N Bake" (unbeknownst to me at that time) they wholeheartedly agreed, so right then and there we became "Triple Crown Shake 'N Bake." Now at that time most of the players in our table shuffleboard league were older than us; we had by far the youngest average age on our team. We were a bunch of up-and-coming players with good fundamentals and big egos. We would always talk a little smack and hoot and holler during the match to get in our opponents heads. Well, taking a page from the movie, I started yelling "Shake 'N Bake!" when one of the teammates or myself would make a great shot. We got so good so fast that my chant became quite commonplace within the walls of Triple Crown Sports Bar, and people just started calling me "Shake 'N Bake" in casual conversation, so the nickname just kind of blossomed and I let it stick. Although Triple Crown Shake 'N Bake the shuffleboard team has disbanded and reformed a couple times, and it's currently on hiatus, we have won 5 league championships as a team (including our first championship in our second season as Shake 'N Bake), and many of us are still playing on other teams. Every 6 months or so Team Shake 'N Bake (me, Nate, Jason, and several others that have played on the team) gets together and puts on a Charity BBQ Benefit for an orphanage & women's shelter in Uganda.
So there you have it. I took my shuffleboard nickname and transferred it to my geocaching nickname, with a few punctuation changes. The owners of Triple Crown Sports Bar, James and Dar, have been good friends of mine since 2005 (James was the one who gave me my first formal shuffleboard lessons). They have just recently started caching under the nickname "jjamesdar" (thanks to me
) and have enjoyed it. I now look forward to chatting with them on league night on a topic other than shuffleboard. If you make this grab on a Wednesday evening between 7:30ish and midnight, chances are at least one of us will be there playing in our league. Pop on in and say "Hi!" Just ask any of the friendly waitstaff where we're at.
