For at krystallen overhovedet kan fungerer i lyssværdet, skal en Jedi eller Sith først påvirke krystallen med Kraften. Dette kræver at der mediteres over krystallen i mange dage. Jedi bruger fortrinsvis naturlige krystaller, mens Sith ofte bruger syntetiske krystaller i røde nuancer.Lyssværdets farve har i mange årtusinder været en indikation på en Jedi’s valgte karriere. En blå farver indikerer en Jedi Guardian, grøn en Jedi Consular, og gul en Jedi Sentinel. Igennem årene har en lang række krystaller (og dermed) farver dog været anvendt.

To power a lightsaber, the Jedi or Sith have to imbue the crystal with the Force. This requires the Force-user to meditate on the crystal for many days. Jedi mostly use natural crystals, while the Sith have used red-hued synthetic crystals.
The color of a lightsaber have for many centuries been an indication of a Jedi’s chosen career. Thus, a blue color indicated a Jedi Guardian, green a Jedi Consular, and yellow a Jedi Sentinel. Throughout the years a plethora of colors have been introduced for lightsaber use.
