Geocache Description:

This is a Two-stage Multi Cache. Using information off a plaque at the posted coordinates, calculate the location of the final.

A photo of the plaque has been uploaded to this cache page (if you would like to solve it from home)

Using Plaque, find the four digit number on it. Let those number digits be ABCD
(so if the number was 1234, A would be 1, B would be 2, etc.)

For the North coordinates:
  • Get a 3 digit number by taking the values of: C, B/2, and C ( / means divided by)
  • Using your 3 digit number from the above step, add that to: N 42 59.100
  • The checksum of your final 3 digits of the north coordinates should be a 5 (adding each of the last 3 digits together)
For the West coordinates:
  • Get a 2 digit number by taking the values of: A and B/2
  • Subtract the 2 digit number in the step above from: W 85 33.728
  • The checksum of your final 3 digits of the West coordinates should be 20
Plan your approach wisely (I would say the easiest will be to follow main path all the way down and double back, there is an area that is soggy from the spring/creek, if you are more adventurous, I also followed the main path about 2/3 of the way down and then found a mountain bike path that I followed to the cache location) Be warned it can be a bit soggy down in this park. Boots are suggested and likely required if it has rained recently.

Norton Mound Group, (also known as Norton Mound Site and Hopewell Indian Mounds Park), is a prehistoric Goodall Focus mounds site near Grand Rapids, Michigan.

According to the National Park Service's Statement of Significance: "These are the most important and best-preserved Hopewell mounds in the western Great Lakes region. The Norton Mound Group was the center of Hopewellian culture in that area, from ca. 400 B.C. to A.D. 400. Excavations in 1874 revealed numerous burials rich in grave offerings, and later excavations in 1963-1964 provided information on mound construction methods. At one time some 40 mounds were present, and though fewer than half remain today, these are well-preserved in a Grand Rapids city park."

The site was listed on the Michigan Register of Historic Sites in 1957, and it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965. According to the National Park Service, "Severe erosion, flooding, and nearby development threaten the Mound Group.

The Public Museum of Grand Rapids has been awarded funding to complete a Cultural Landscape Management Plan that will assess the site's condition. Public awareness of the NHL has increased due to ongoing development of the Millennium Park. That plan was completed in February, 2007. The site is located between Indian Mounds Drive and Interstate 196 near Grand Rapids. The Norton Mounds site is currently closed to the public.
