The track follows a section of the original tramway taking coal from the mine at Kaoota down to the long-gone jetty at the end of Gemalla Road.
Here is an <information brochure>. This shows two other access points.
This is a track that you can take your dog on a lead or ride your horse or bicycle. NOTE: Past GZ, it can be wet and slippery in winter and after rains. So if you walk the whole track, wear appropriate footwear.
Enjoy.
History: Coal was mined at Kaoota in the hills behind Margate, from 1881. It was originally backpacked down to Margate. From 1904 coal was trucked to Margate but by early 1905 the tramway and a wharf at Margate were under construction. The tramway was 12 miles long, with 10 bridges and 5 sidings was completed in August 1906. Total cost including 2 locomotives and a ship to carry the coal to Hobart was 18,000 pounds. In 1907 the coal company failed and the tramway was used for carting timber and fruit. The Government purchased the line in 1916. The tramway was eventually pulled up in 1922, after being leased to the Kingborough Council for 3 years (1917/1920). More information on the colliery and the tramway, and indeed much more local history can be found at the nearby Channel Heritage Centre.
