Newtownhamilton or simply Newtown to locals is a small town in South Armagh. Before the Plantation of Ulster it was known as Tullyvallen and was renamed by Alexander Hamilton in 1773 and was once an important stop off between Armagh and Dundalk. The town has suffered in past decades from the rise of other towns in the area like Markethill, Castleblaney and Bessbrook as well as cities like Newry and Armagh becoming little more than a group of houses and small shops. This series will highlight a few local areas of history and interest.
This cache is placed on a small, short road just outside the town. It is very likely this was once the main road from Newtownhamilton to Markethill before the main road was created. Indeed this is still locally known as the Old Rd. However a problem arose in the mid 70's with the building of the bungalow to the left if you are looking at the two pillars. The owners had applied for planning permission and were told that as nobody else lived on this road, it actually didn't have a name. Old Road seemed an obvious choice but there was already an Old Road on the other side of Newtownhamilton.
Therefore the lady of the house was granted permission to name the road and so she chose Old Mount Road, and in doing so wrote her name into history. Her name is Margaret Copeland in case you are ever asked this in a table quiz. Since then several other houses have been built on the road.
