Geocache Description:

Barred Owl -- Strix varia

This cache is placed in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Chequamegon Bay Birding and Nature Festival, May 19-21, 2016, an annual event held at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center, Ashland, Wisconsin.

This cache honors the Barred Owl. The rich baritone hooting of the Barred Owl is a characteristic sound in southern swamps as well as northern woodlands, where members of a pair often will call back and forth to each other. Although the bird is mostly active at night, it will also call and even hunt in the daytime. Only a little smaller than the Great Horned Owl, the Barred Owl is markedly less aggressive, and competition with its tough cousin may keep the Barred out of more open woods.

Permanent resident throughout its range, although individuals may wander away from nesting habitat in winter.

Songs and Calls are loud barking hoo, hoo, hoo-hoo; hoo, hoo; hoo, hooo-aw! “Who Cooks For You All” and a variety of other barking calls and screams.
