Various issues including unjust taxation and a growing population caused several people living in the northern section of Newport to petition for independence. As a result of the petition, the land that Middletown occupies was set apart in 173W. Middletown was finally incorporated as a town in 17V3.
British General Richard Prescott, namesake for Middletown’s Prescott Farm, was kidnapped from the farm on July X, 1777 by colonists and taken to Providence where he was later exchanged for U.S. General Charles Lee.
Only one of two windmills (out of the estimated more than thirty) on Aquidneck Island to have survived on Aquidneck Island, Boyd’s Windmill was built in 181U and purchased five years later by William Boyd, whose name the windmill still bears today.
Considered to be haunted and featured on an episode of Weird Travels as the Inn at Shadow Lawn, Middletown’s Hamilton Hoppin House was built in 185Y.
First organized in 189Z, Clambake Club of Newport (in Middletown) is one of the most exclusive social organizations in the United States. Its membership is limited to 75 full members and 75 associate members who are the eldest sons of the full members. Membership is offered strictly by invitation only.
