When John Jones made an unprovoked attack on Richard Atkinson at the Hibernian Accommodation House, Waipori in December 1865, it started a chain of events that touched many people.
The 1865 stabbing of Richard Atkinson at Waipori is commemorated at this place by a memorial plaque close to the spot where the Hibernian Accommodation house stood all those years ago.
The plaque was placed here as part of the 150 years reunion celebrations for descendants of the many miners who once lived through the gold rush at the Waipori Gold Field, much of which is now inundated by the waters of Lake Mahinerangi, a hydro lake created by the Dunedin City Council which put a stop to all mining in the valley below this spot.
