Geocache Description:

We noticed 2 more erratics here, in the field to the East. You may have to look closely to see them. This particular area outside Airdrie is rife with these remnants of Alberta's last Ice Age. The bigger one is marked by our Erratic Behaviour #2 right across the street.

These rocks are part of the Foothills Erratics Train, and are found all over Alberta. We frequently discover them as we are driving the back roads of Alberta. These giant quartzite pieces would have originally been a part of the mountain ranges around Jasper, Alberta. They piggybacked on enormous glaciers/ice sheets during the last glaciation of Alberta. When the ice melted, the rocks were dropped onto the prairies. Not every large rock in an Alberta field is a glacial erratic--but you can generally get a sense of when they are, due to the their composition and the fact that they normally sit in giant depressions on the fields, due to their extreme mass and the thousands of years they have been sitting in their "erratic" locations on the prairies of Alberta.
