Geocache Description:

This series is based around episodes/characters of the popular comedy Phoenix Nights. A figure of eight walk of approximately 4.5 miles along a section of the Shropshire canal and nearby quiet country lanes.

The Captain will be checking your membership on the way into the Phoenix Club. He may also check your knowledge on local geology. As the Captain is not very computer literate, send your answers to us and we will verify your answers on his behalf....

The geological deposits of the immediate area are classified as "Till, Devensian - Diamicton" i.e. boulder clay or other unstratified sediment deposited by melting glaciers or ice sheets dating to the period between 120,000 and 10,000 years ago. The Devensian is interpreted as the last full glacial series within the Pleistocene. The term Diamiction relates to poorly sorted sediment that contains a wide range of particle sizes i.e. sand or larger size particles that are suspended in a mud matrix. The rock is Sherwood Sandstone Group (the Helsby Sandstone Formation) : sedimentary bedrock formed approximately????????

Please email or message us via our profile and answer the following:

• Sherwood Sandstone Group (the Helsby Sandstone Formation) can be seen here, The sandstones here are Lower Triassic and were laid down between ??? and ??? million years ago.. Which specific section of this period would the rock have been formed?.

• Where would the United Kingdom have been situated in the world during this time period??

• Estimate the height and width of the exposed rock face that you can see. Describe the colour and texture of the rock.

• Estimate the angle (in degrees from the horizontal) of the wear lines that you see. Why do you think these are NOT horizontal? • Why do you think the rock face is more weathered lower down??

• Please supply a photograph of yourself and/or your GPS at GZ as further proof of your visit, As per Earth Cache logging requirements, faces are not necessary.

A walk of varied terrain and some interesting caches. Some sections may be very muddy depending on the season and you may encounter livestock between Caches 3 and 4 when leaving the road to get to the towpath. Although the lanes are generally quiet please take care with children and dogs. Between Caches 15 and 16 you will need to cross under the canal along a narrow stretch of road with a blind bend, so extra care must be taken here. As ever, tweezers and a pen needed. Please ensure you replace each cache carefully.  PLEASE READ EACH INDIVIDUAL CACHE  PAGE - PERTINENT INFORMATION WILL BE GIVEN FOR THAT SPECIFIC CACHE.  DONT FORGET TO MAKE A NOTE OF THE BONUS NUMBERS AS YOU GO AROUND!!! THERE ARE 6 BONUS NUMBERS TO COLLECT. EACH NUMBER REPEATS IN AT LEAST 3 DIFFERENT CACHES. We hope you enjoy this series. :-)
