Propella Traditional Cache

This is a sculpture named Propella.

Its designer drew inspiration from a famous Vickers poster of the 1920s depicting a classical female figure with outstretched arms encompassing Vickers warships and aircraft. It is the propeller from the Vickers Vimy aeroplane that Propella holds high, wrapped in a spiral of swirls to represent the movement of air and standing on a plinth replicating the plane's engine block.
The sculptures were inspired by the Vickers armaments factory in Crayford, which is where the Crayford Townhall Square development sits. From 1888 to 1985, this factory was a major employer in the area and at the time of the First World War employed as many as 12,000 men and women. It manufactured aircraft, including the FB5 'Gunbus' and the Vickers Vimy.
