Mill workers bunkhouse
Before National Grid and Narragansett Electric were statewide electricity producers, Walter Hawkins generated electricity from water flowing out of Hawkins Pond into a turbine. This electricity powered his sawmill, home, tenement houses, the neighborhood, and the woolen mill in the nearby hamlet of Skeeterville (aka Clarkville) on Pulaski Road. In the 1920's Narragansett Electric bought out Hawkins electricity enterprise, and the right of way through his property to the mill in Skeeterville. The trail to the cache is that right-of-way, and along the trail stumps of the old utility poles are still visible. Not far off the trail is the shack and the foundation of what appears to be a much larger building, perhaps a bunkhouse. In 1993 the Glocester Land Trust acquired the 75 acre Hawkins property and Narragansett Electric relinquished the right-of-way as power lines now went along the paved roads, not through the woods. Note: bow hunting is allowed on this property from September to January, so please wear fluorescent orange.
