Geocache Description:

This geocache has limited hours of availability. Please the Denver FireFighter Museum page before seeking the cache!

Test your navigational and problem-solving skills plus hand-eye coordination to solve this relatively simple mystery geocache located at the Denver Firefighters Museum.

To begin, enter the coordinates for waypoint #1 in your GPSr or your favorite mobile phone mapping or geocaching app: N39° 44.419' W104° 59.831'. Walk to this location. When you arrive, collect the following information from the nearby statue and plaque:

A= The day of the month displayed on the ribbon that is being held in the eagle's mouth
B= The number displayed on the front of the figure's hat, multiplied by 2
C= The number of letters in the name written on the fire hose on the top, near the nozzle

Enter the coordinates for waypoint #2 in your GPSr or your favorite mobile phone mapping or geocaching app: N39° 44.444' W104° 59.554'. When you arrive at this location, enter the large wooden door and hang an immediate right, moving all the way down to the southern most wall. On the wall you would have found a 12-cylinder engine but now it's gone

D= The number of cylinders in this engine. It's 12. laugh

Using the information you've collected for A, B, C, and D, write down the following value for E:

E = A+B+C-D

You should be left with a single digit, positive number between 1 and 9. If not, go back and recheck your answers/math! If you still need help, feel free to ask the front desk volunteer for a "hint".

Now head back to the wooden door but do not go through it. On the right-hand side of the door, you will see the red Firefox computer box mounted on the wall. To activate the computer (and gain access to the contents):

  1. Press and release the silver metal button several times until the value you calculated for E appears on the display. Once the correct number is displayed, release the button and wait for the counter-clockwise spinner to stop automatically (approximately 15 seconds).

  2. If you have entered the correct code, a clockwise spinner will appear, illuminating one LED segment at a time as it moves around the display. Go to step #3.

  3. If you did not enter the code correctly in step 1, the Firefox computer will go back into standby mode. Double check your answers to A-E and try step #1 again. If you still need help, feel free to ask the front desk volunteer for a "hint".

    Notice there are three horizontal segments in the display. As the spinner moves, it will occasionally illuminate the middle horizontal segment as illustrated on the right. When this happens, press the button as quickly as you can while the middle segment is still illuminated.

    If you fail to properly press the button within about 1-2 minutes the machine will reset and you'll have to go back to step 1.

    If you are quick enough, the display will start blinking and a 3 digit number will be shown several times. Use that 3 digit number to unlock the unit and gain access to the containers for the log, geocaching trackables (which move from geocache to geocache), and kiddie swag for swapping.

After you sign the log sheet please make sure to properly replace the inner containers, close the access panel, and scramble the combination lock when you are finished! THANK YOU!
