Congrats to 51Capitals “and props for sharing FTF”, Laune253 and Sundaydinnersquad for FTF. Wow that was fast.
If you use Google street view you can see the building still there and ready for business but go to satellite view and you can see the damage before it was torn down.
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - A section of Pacific Highway was closed for hours in Federal Way on Tuesday as firefighters battled a stubborn two-alarm fire in a commercial building that started in a basement marijuana grow operation.
Crews responded to the scene, in the 29200 block of Pacific Highway South in Federal Way, at about 6 a.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of smoke and flames coming from the structure.
Aerial footage from KOMO's Air 4 showed flames belching from the top of the building and huge plumes of smoke soon after crews arrived. Three hours later, flames and smoke were still pouring from the building as firefighters struggled to bring the stubborn blaze under control.
The building houses a family-owned trophy shop, Awards by Wilson, as well as a tattoo and piercing salon. A martial arts supply store in the building is no longer in business.
Jason Desima, the owner of the tattoo shop, told KOMO News that he was inside the building when the fire started. He smelled smoke and ran outside, then broke out the glass door of the trophy shop to let their pet cat out.
He said another tenant - a marijuana grow operation - occupied the basement of the building, and investigators later determined the fire started there. It wasn't immediately known whether it was a legal medical pot grow or an illegal operation. Tenants tell KOMO News they knew about the grow operation, but were told by the owners it was a legal business. A spokesperson with the State Liquor Control Board says their records show nobody at the Federal Way address is licensed to grow recreational marijuana, however the state does not have records or oversight when it comes to medical marijuana growers.
Police detectives are waiting for a search warrant to enter the grow operation to help determine if the grow operation is legal or not.
"I heard their wiring wasn't the greatest," the tattoo shop owner said.
Ed Plumlee, assistant chief of South King Fire & Rescue, said the entire basement level had been sectioned off into compartments with plywood barriers, making access difficult and further impeding firefighting efforts.
In the meantime, the two businesses not connected to the grow operation lost everything in the fire.
"I'm lost, I don't know what to do," Desima said. "This is what I did every day, you know, this is how I put food on the table for my family."
Emergency officials closed Pacific Highway in both directions at the scene for hours while firefighting efforts continued, because fire hydrants are located on the opposite side of the highway from the burning building.
The tenants who own the marijuana grow operation never showed-up to inspect damage to their damage. The owner of the strip mall could not be reached for comment.
