Another of the many bridges across the Montreal River that separate Wisconsin and Michigan. This one was reconstructed in 1991. Mrs WT can recall many stories of how she and her brother used to race home across this bridge, sometimes because they were in trouble, and sometimes just for the fun of it. Ahh, the simpler times.
The Montreal River flows to Lake Superior and for most of its length defines the Wisconsin–Michigan border. It is 47.8 miles long and drains approximately 270 square miles. The Ojibwe name for the river is Gaa-waasijiwaang, meaning "where there is whitewater". The main branch of the Montreal River begins at Pine Lake in the town of Oma. Downstream of Ironwood the river passes over Saxon Falls and Superior Falls and enters Oronto Bay on the shore of Lake Superior, approximately 15 miles northwest of Ironwood, MI. There are four named waterfalls on the Montreal River; Peterson Falls, Interstate Falls, Saxon Falls, and Superior Falls. The West Fork Montreal River issues from Island Lake in Iron County and flows 24.7 miles northwardly, roughly in parallel to the Montreal River, past the city of Montreal, Wisconsin. It flows into the Montreal River downstream of Hurley. There are four named waterfalls on the West Fork Montreal River: Kimball Falls, Rock Cut Falls, Gile Falls, and Spring Camp Falls.
