The s.s.United States is an American ocean liner and is affectionately known as The Big "U", she broke all speed records to cross the Atlantic Ocean in both directions, those records still stand today. Designed by Gibbs Cox naval architects and built at Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock in Virginia in 1952, she sailed for a short 16 years before the jet age forced her into early retirement. Philadelphia has been her home since the mid 90's, she has narrowly avoided the scrapyard on a few occasions. The s.s. United States Conservancy is an organization that is working hard to preserve this American engineering marvel and to secure a permanent home so she can be enjoyed by the public as a static attraction. The Conservancy still needs our help though, with tax deductible donations they can preserve the ship's legacy. Visit WEARETHEUNITEDSTATES.ORG for details.
