Geocache Description:

Formonthills is a young woodland with lots to offer.  A total of 80,000 trees have been planted with the help of the local community, with wildflower meadows, wetland areas, abundant wildlife, several circular walks, and a commanding position offering spectacular views.  Don't forget to look out for sculptures along the way.  A mix of hard path and grass tracks take you on an exploration of this hillside with excellent views.

The common wild Foxglove appears throughout Scotland. Digitalis Purpurea with its distinct shade of purple, or Digitalis Alba in its white form

Very well known and easily recognisable with its tall spikes which can bear up to eighty bell-shaped blooms. This plant is poisonous, famously used in many Agatha Christie novels as the poison Digitalis. As soon as a woodland is cleared they appear in abundance amongst the stumps., or can be spotted amongst banks of unfurling bracken and on heathland. Flowering from June to september. County Flower of Argyll A perennial plant, the leaves appear the first year and the flower the second, a distinct rosette of grey green sharp tongue shaped leaves amongst the forest floor.

The flowers grow in multitude around the tall stems, trumpet shaped hiding its pollen so the bees have to crawl right inside. A single foxglove can produce over a million seeds dustlike seeds

The mottled markings on foxglove flowers were once thought to be the handprints of fairies..

The Song of the Foxglove Fairy

"Foxglove, Foxglove,
What do you see?"
The cool green woodland,
The fat velvet bee;
Hey, Mr bumble
I've got honey here for thee!

"Foxglove, Foxglove,
What do you see now?"
The soft summer moonlight
On bracken, grass, and bought;
And all the little fairies dancing
As only they know how.
