A wetland biome has water that is standing still. They are found in low lying areas and are often close to lakes, rivers, and streams. They may have water in them all the time or only during certain times of the year. The combination of both land and water is essential to form a wetland. They help the environment in that they have a natural supply of water. They help to prevent flooding as they are able to take on excess water from other sources. They also have the natural abililty to purify surface water. Wetlands also provide much needed resources for wildlife, especially migrating waterfowl.
The Friends of Fort Belle Fontaine Park worked with many other organizations and agency to restore a 7-acre wetland on the area funded by a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Sounds of frogs and toads can often be heard coming from the pond and waterfowl, like blue-winged teal and mallards, can be seen floating on the water.
The cache is located a short distance from the wetlands, but if you listen in the warmer months you can probably still hear the amphibians from the pond.
Park hours are 8 a.m. to one half hour past official sunset. The park shares property with a state facility, so there is a guard gate at the entrance of the property. Sign in as a park visitor.

Special permission to hide caches in St. Louis County parks is NOT needed as long as the Groundspeak rules are followed. "Blanket Permission" has been worked out in advance with the park service. DO NOT CALL THE PARK as they cannot handle the calls. The Groundspeak cache reviewer does need to know exactly how and where the caches are hidden and what type of containers are used. The geocaching liaisons will notify the park service of new caches. Remember NO AMMO BOXES or PVC PIPE caches. |
