In preparation to the Spring Offensive in 1813 during what has become known as the War of 1812, Major General Prevost Commander of British Force in North America ordered elements of New Brunswick’s 104th Regiment of Foot to march from Fredericton the Capital to Kingston Ontario in Upper Canada. In February and March 600 brave soldiers with the basic of winter survival equipment marched up the frozen Saint John River to War. Each day for a week 100 men on snowshoes pulled their toboggans upriver in the worst winter in decades.
