"There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We can reduce the focus to a soft blur, or sharpen it to crystal clarity. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to ... The Outer Limits."
This show scared the bejeesus out of me when I was a kid. The first episode I remember watching was "The Zanti Misfits" which aired December 30, 1963. The acting (which includes a young Bruce Dern) is not great, nor is the dialogue, but the premise, visual power and an ending which lingers in the memory earned this episode a place as #98 in TV Guide's 1997 list of the "100 Greatest Episodes of All Time" The imaginative premise has an army unit occupying a modern-day ghost town to ensure the safe arrival of an alien spacecraft carrying prisoners. No one is enthused about this mission - the Zantis threatened to declare war if their request to establish a penal colony on Earth was not granted. The Zantis are creepy things with insect bodies and human-like heads, and the special effects are fairly well done for the time.
A low-life drifter (Dern) and a runaway wife trying to escape the law break into the secured area, spot a spaceship, and Dern's character goes to investigate. His meddling results in a battle between the Zantis and the soldiers. The fight and the twist at the end make the episode one of the all time greats. You will understand the reference to The Outer Limits when you arrive at the cache site.
As for the rest... "We now return control of your television set to you. Until next week at the same time, when the control voice will take you to... The Outer Limits"
