Geocache Description:

The cache is a log only P&G, located by the Sauratown Trail's Old Winston Road Parking Lot. It is at the entrance to trail section 15. Please stay out of the yard of the nearby residence; there is no reason to go in it.

The Sauratown Trail is an official section of the NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail that connects Pilot Mountain State Park on the west side and Hanging Rock State Park on the east side. The trail is approximately 22 miles long, the majority of which is located on private property. The ST was built, and is maintained, by the volunteer efforts of the Sauratown Trails Association (STA), a local non-profit.

The Sauratown Trail is open most of the year to all horseback riders and hikers. For your safety, THE TRAILS ARE CLOSED DURING DEER HUNTING SEASON (early November through January 1st) and AFTER A HARD RAIN when the trails are muddy.

TRAIL RULES:

Use of these trails is a recreational privilege offered courtesy of the landowners who live on or near the trails. We request the following trail manners be observed out of respect for the landowner's generosity in allowing us to use these trails, as well as for everyone's safety.

Park only in designated areas.

Horseback riders and hikers must stay on the designated trails. This is because of the contract agreement with the landowners and for your safety. Trail caches are located within a few feet of the trail.

Look for white circle markers on the trees to guide you. One circle means continue straight ahead; two circles means the trail makes a turn there. Please be especially mindful at trail intersections and LOOK for the white circle markers to keep you on the correct trail. This is farmland and there are private farm trails that run across the ST. Some intersections may be confusing.

To prevent erosion, do not ride the trails if they are really muddy. Wait for a better day.

Alcoholic beverages, firearms, and drugs are not allowed.

No pets other than horses are allowed on the trails. The trail passes through working farms with livestock, and the sight of unfamiliar dogs can cause farm animals to become defensive of their territory.

No bikes allowed on the trails.

Camp at designated campgrounds only. This trail is built across private lands; it would be like camping in your neighbors yard without permission.

The trail and all parking areas are closed at dark.

Take only pictures. Carry-in, carry-out; please don't litter.

Sauratown Trails Association, Inc. is not responsible for accidents, thefts, or any other incidents that may occur to people, livestock or property at the parking lot or on the trails.

Cache Info:

The Old Winston Road Parking Area is located at the intersection of Old Winston Road and Coon Road. It is graveled and has a one table picnic shelter. The cache is located just outside the parking lot at the entrance of trail section 15; it can not be accessed from the neighboring residence's yard. There is only room for a log sheet.
