A Wyvern is a legendary winged creature with a Dragon's head, a forked tongue, a reptilian body, scaley neck, leathery wings and a barbed tail. A sea-dwelling variant, termed the sea-wyvern, has a fish tail in place of a barbed Dragon's tail.
Wyverns are generally said to breathe fire or possess a venomous bite. Unlike a traditional Dragon which has four legs, a Wyvern only possesses two legs with eagle-like claws for feet.
Wyverns were thought to pollute the earth over which they trailed, so that the grass was marked and fungus grew, which led to some ancient explanations for "fairy rings". The Wyvern shares the Dragon's passion for treasure, and its capacity for vigilance.
The word Wyvern is derived from the old french word "Wyvre", itself from the Latin "Vipera", meaning "Viper" or "asp".
Wyverns are important throughout history and heraldry and they are often used on flags and as a mascots for schools and sports teams. They also appear in medieval and modern European and British literature as well as a multitude of video games, and regularly turn up in various forms of art throughout the ages. A golden wyvern is believed to have been the symbol of the medieval kingdom of Wessex.
