Corner 16 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

-allenite-: As there's been no response from the cache owner to my previous note, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that geocaches archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

CACHE: Yes, it's one of those. Wasn't allowed for much creativity here, however I brought you here for the history as well as fulfilling some cacher's need for the numbers. This is a 24/7 cache. Watch for partymuggles, votermuggles, and firemuggles. There might even be a spidermuggle or two here.

HISTORY: Formed in 1855, Deerfield Township separated from Marathon Township but still included Rich until 1858. In 1874, much of Deerfield Twp. was still owned by logging companies and the only organized settlement was Elm Creek (later called Johnson Mill).  Henry Oliver was one of the first township officers, and over the years there's been other Olivers in township politics. Deerfield is one of the most diverse in the county with land types. It has swamp, lowlands, ravines, rolling hills, flat farmland, the Flint River and several lakes. The first post office was named Drake since Deerfield was already taken and ran out of the home of Abner Folsom, common in the 1800's. The official location was moved to the present day location of the township hall in the northwest corner of section 16, and was often referred to as Corner 16. In 1906, Drake or Corner 16, had almost everything a township would need such as a dry goods store, grocer, shingle mill, a feed mill, saw mill, shoesmith, blacksmith, boarding house, wagonmaker, crockery, Maccabee Hall, and the Gleaners Hall not far away. For the longest time the only church was at Booth and Tozer Roads. In the early 1900's, Deerfield was flooded by developers from Detroit who built cottages on Barnes Lake. Local resident Lewis King jumped on the bandwagon and developed Kings Landing on Miller Lake. Today the names of Drake and Corner 16 are almost forgotten, yet Deerfield is beginning to grow again.

TOWNSHIP HALL HISTORY: The small building across Burnside Road to the north, currently a home, was the original township hall building. A new, much grander structure, was built but a big portion of that burned. The northern section of today's building is what remained, the empty grass lot is where the rest of it stood. An addition was put on and it included a public entertainment space and the fire department.
